Marie Hélène Auclair is not among those who crave the spotlight. We may refer to Michel de Montaigne, who wrote:

« Il faut se réserver une arrière-boutique rien qu’à nous, vraiment libre, dans laquelle nous puissions établir notre liberté, et qui soit notre retraite dans la solitude. C’est là qu’il faut nous entretenir quotidiennement avec nous-mêmes, et de façon tellement intime que nul contact avec des choses étrangères puisse y trouver place. » ("A man must keep a little back shop where he can be himself without reserve. In solitude alone can he know true freedom…")

Marie Hélène Auclair finds a real freedom in the privacy of her studio, her principal retreat from contact with those things that could distract from her art, where she can commune with that ‘inner muse’ in intimate solitude. It is in this solitude and freedom that she applies herself to the daily progress of her art.

From the moment that her works were presented for public viewing, she has been the recipient of prestigious awards, honor and respect. Publications in North America and Europe have featured her art and she has gained the title of ‘Master Pastelist’ as well as being a signatory member of the oldest existing pastel society in America, the Pastel Society of America.

The Little Prince of St-Exupéry fell in love with a special flower and was advised on love by a wise fox: “ on ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.” (It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.)

This is the way her paintings are meant to be seen. While beautiful to the eye, they are meant to be seen with the heart as well, since that is what they are inspired by; the heart. And it is with the heart that one falls in love with them.

This is why her portraits have a constancy about them. The emotions of the interior person shine through. Hers is a special quality without artifice or ostentation.

This same reality is seen in her still-life works. They become real to us with depth and the ability to communicate with us.
