The Art of Pastel – Suzanne Godbout. A demonstration and initiation into the world of pastel with Suzanne Godbout, former president of the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada. Discover why pastel is often referred to as “Diamond Dust” and how this material has seduced artists, like Degas and Delacroix, into acknowledging it as a preferred medium.

Press release from Stewart Hall:

Luminosity as a defining characteristic of the pastel medium stems from the vibrant tones and radiant colours that denote both a sense of mystery and glitter in the work. This radiant light also brings an incomparable freshness to this oldest of materials. From the first use of earth pigments in the drawings in the Lascaux caves, Pastel has captured the artist’s imagination with its expressive quality, flexibility and endurance. It is also one of the most permanent of materials despite its fragile look for when protected by fixative and glass, pastel will never crack, darken or yellow. The Stewart Hall Art Gallery is pleased to present Pastel – The Luminous Medium, an exhibition of recent works by members of the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada (PSEC). Founded in Montreal in 1995, the Pastel Society, a non-profit organization, represents both professional and amateur pastel artists. It actively promotes and encourages an awareness and appreciation of the art of the pastel medium. From its roster of members, the PSEC has granted a special status, that of Master Pastellist, to artists who have achieved a high level of proficiency in the pastel medium. Several of these Master Pastellists, including Bill Hosner, Claude Texier, Horace Champagne, Juan Cristobal, Denis Jacques and Marie-Hélène Auclair, are among those exhibiting in this exhibition. From nostalgic rural panoramas, animal portraits and seascapes to brilliant abstracts or exotic topographies, the breath of subject matter and expertise of technique mark the members of the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada as not only accomplished artists but also talented ambassadors of pastel- the most luminous of mediums.
